The RIGOL RP1001C and RP1002C are powered clamp-on current probes that convert AC and DC conductor current into a voltage signal for display on an oscilloscope or compatible digital multimeter. They allow current waveforms, transient events and DC levels to be measured without opening the conductor path.

Both models provide two selectable output sensitivities, manual zero adjustment and an overload indicator. Battery or AC-adapter operation supports both portable troubleshooting and extended laboratory measurements.

Model Differences & Selection

  • RP1001C – Higher-current measurements: Provides DC–300kHz bandwidth and measures up to 100A peak in its 10mV/A range. Select this model for higher-current power supplies, motors, appliances and industrial electrical equipment where current capacity is more important than bandwidth.
  • RP1001C sensitivity ranges: The 100mV/A range provides greater sensitivity for currents up to 10A peak, while the 10mV/A range supports measurements up to 100A peak.
  • RP1002C – Faster and lower-current signals: Provides DC–1MHz bandwidth and a rated current capacity of 70A peak. Select this model for switching regulators, converters, electronic loads and pulsed-current measurements requiring faster response.
  • RP1002C sensitivity ranges: The 500mV/A range provides greater output sensitivity for lower currents, while the 50mV/A range supports higher-current measurements up to the rated 70A peak.

Choose the RP1001C for higher maximum current and longer battery runtime. Choose the RP1002C when 1MHz bandwidth and greater sensitivity to lower-current variations are the primary requirements.

Key Features

  • AC and DC measurement: Displays current direction, DC level and time-varying current components on an oscilloscope.
  • Clamp-on design: Measures current around a single conductor without inserting a shunt into the circuit.
  • Two selectable sensitivity ranges: Allows the output level to be matched to high-current or lower-current measurements.
  • Manual zero adjustment: Corrects the DC offset before measurement and can offset an existing DC component when required.
  • Overload indication: A red indicator warns when the measured current exceeds the capacity of the selected range.
  • Oscilloscope and multimeter operation: The BNC output connects to oscilloscopes, while the supplied BNC-to-banana adapter supports compatible digital multimeters.
  • Battery or AC-adapter power: Supports portable operation and longer continuous bench measurements.
  • 100cm output cable: Provides practical reach between the conductor and measuring instrument.

Typical Applications

  • Switching power-supply current analysis
  • DC converter and inverter testing
  • Motor startup and operating-current measurement
  • Battery and charging-system diagnostics
  • Electronic load and power-device testing
  • Appliance and industrial equipment maintenance
  • Current transient and pulse observation
  • Embedded hardware power-consumption analysis

Oscilloscope and Multimeter Measurements

The probe output is connected to an oscilloscope through the supplied dual-BNC coaxial cable. With DC coupling, the displayed waveform contains both AC and DC current components. AC coupling can be used when only the changing current component is required.

A supplied BNC-to-banana adapter also allows the probes to work with compatible digital multimeters. The instrument reads the probe’s voltage output according to the selected sensitivity range.

Common Specifications

  • Measurement type: AC and DC current
  • Output connection: BNC
  • Maximum conductor diameter: 11mm for RP1001C; 10.3mm for RP1002C
  • Output cable length: 100cm
  • Power source: 9V alkaline battery or supplied AC adapter
  • Working temperature: 0–50°C
  • Measurement environment: Pollution Degree 2

Safety Ratings

  • RP1001C: Maximum working voltage of 300V CAT III or 600V CAT II
  • RP1002C: Maximum working voltage of 600V CAT III or 600V CAT II

Maximum permissible current depends on the selected sensitivity range, waveform, frequency and measurement category. The applicable current-versus-frequency derating limits should be observed during high-current or higher-frequency measurements.

Why Choose the RIGOL RP1001C or RP1002C?

These probes add clamp-on AC/DC current waveform measurement to a general-purpose oscilloscope without requiring a dedicated probe power supply. The RP1001C addresses higher-current applications up to 100A peak, while the RP1002C provides 1MHz bandwidth and higher sensitivity for faster, lower-current electronic signals.
